Musicians and Now Fashion Icons

Fashion and music go hand in hand. Musicians are now becoming the new trendsetters and fashion icons. No where is this more apparent than in Hip hop. The Migos, A$AP Rocky, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, and Kendrick Lamar are but a few artist who are entrenched in the fashion world. Rocky recently was featured for Dior’s SS17 ad campaign. Marc Jacob’s chose to feature the retro Hip Hop style for his Fall women’s fashion show.

As musicians become more prominent within the fashion world the culture of Hip Hop/Rap and R&B will continue to spread and be viewed by a wider audience. Fashion is something new for me to write on but I thoroughly enjoy it and will take my best shot at giving my ideas on how I am inspired by an artist’s fashion sense. I compiled a small group of artist that currently inspire me, by not only their music, but also by what they wear.

I plan to continue posting on music and fashion because there are so many artist I look to for fashion inspiration. These artist are in no particular order as I feel they equally have great style. Is there anyone I missed on the list? Comment and we can debate or discuss!

Jorja Smith: First up we have Jorja Smith, the 20 year old from England. I first heard of Smith on Drake’s More Life Album. I was captivated by her voice on the Black Panther Album banger I AM. Here are my favorite looks of hers.

If there was ever was a look for male concert goers this would be it. Metal band t-shirts and graphic tee shirts are the go to tops for male Hip Hop and Rap fans.

Dua Lipa: This new Pop Star from London England has made a splash since her smash hit New Rules came out last year. Dua Lipa has a mixture of a casual and sporty look. Often she combines the two to create an amazing look. Much like Jorja Smith you can see the confidence that Dua Lipa exudes through her fierce looks and choice of bright colors.

Just Play Podcast with Manny P

2018 Memorial Day Weekend will be one that is remembered for a long time. It might the beginning of what will hopefully be a great summer with a lot of memorable music releases. Artist from Kanye West to Drake to Florence & The Machine will be dropping new albums in June. The early summer releases of A$AP Rocky’s Testing and Pusha T’s highly anticipated album Daytona got us off on the right track. It will be interesting to see if the recent feud between Pusha T and Drake will have a lasting impact on the music landscape as we prepare for Drake’s album Scorpion and Kanye West’s album, which currently has no title.

New Hip Hop/ Rap was the direction I was going for on Episode 5 of Just Play podcast. I recorded the show on the La Salle Campus of the Illinois Media School in downtown Chicago. I had a tremendous time preparing this one and hope you enjoy it! I tried to incorporate new adlibs that I find interesting into this one. Coming off my last podcast I was still feeling the dancehall vibe and mixed in some Bounty Killer and Super Cat. Two tracks of TESTING and one from Daytona are featured. Lil Baby, 21 Savage, J Cole, and Gucci Mane are some of the other artist featured on this episode.

Stay tuned as Episode 6 of Just Play Podcast comes to you next week. For now enjoy this one and leave any feedback in the comments section.

Peace and Love,

Manny P

My Best Dressed at the Met

I am a lover of both museums and fashion, the Met Gala brings the two together each year. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York host one of the biggest nights in fashion and its a site to see. This years theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” I would love to one day attend and or cover this event because I think it would be a unique experience. As a creative I only have recently became interested in fashion but clothing is important to our culture as much as any other art form. I myself am not the most stylish person as I like to dress simply but I do enjoy and appreciate the beauty of clothing. Below are my favorite looks of the night and my comments and thoughts on why I was drawn to them.

Priyanka Chopra: This is my favorite look of the night and what more can be said here. She is absolutely stunning and sticks to the theme. The silk dress and color go amazingly well with the gold mail chain. The deep red lipstick goes perfectly with the dress. Blown away by the Indian Actress!

Migos: Fashion Icons in the Hip-Hop/ Rap game! Personality is the word here as the group matches with vibrant colors but each has its own unique touch. Quavo/Huncho with the jewelry really connects the ensemble. Dope.

Blake Lively: comes in with my 2nd best dressed of the night. The long flowing dress accentuates Blake’s best features.

Ashley Graham: Twitter is buzzing about Ashley Graham’s thigh! lol Her look is very sleek and has that classic edginess that Ashley Graham always brings.

Irina Shayk and Bradley Cooper: My Best dressed couple. Cooper comes in with the sharp Tom Ford Tux and bowtie. Irina has the plunging neckline and metallic dress matched well with the choker.

The Broad, LA

The futuristic building of the broad is a marvel to see. Located in downtown L.A., this museum has a collection of over 2,000 pieces. The location reminds me a lot of the museum campus here in Chicago, a beautiful location of museums and architecture in the middle of downtown. The Broad is surrounded by skyscrapers and is only a block from the visual wonder of the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

A fairly new contemporary art museum the Broad opened in 2015. I was drawn to the Broad because of the media post of the gigantic chairs and table! This was one of the many things at the top of my list for my journey to California. Parking is available on the street but is scarce in the area. There are plenty of parking lots in the area. I chose to park at the Broad parking lot and was able to validate for a discounted price.

Prior to making this venture and I did do some research as far as entrance. I was expecting to wait in a huge line because the museum does offer presale tickets in order to skip the daily wait line. There was a lot of foot traffic and many visitors already inside as I could see from the glass windows that surrounds the lower portion of the museum. Upon arriving I was told the usual gallery “no flash photography and no touching”, given my wristband and was allowed to enter. I was pleasantly surprised by the no wait time and took the escalator up to the second floor gallery. The escalator seemed to take me to another dimension due to its sleek, minimal, and light at the end of the tunnel appearance.

Immediately you are launched into a floor with a ton of visitors and magnificent pieces of art work. At the center and heart of the museum currently sits the Jeff Koons Tulips. Tulips, has beautiful vibrant colors and a mirror-like coating the reflects any onlooker’s image back to them.  I had to take a picture of this one!

I did not know which way to go because so much caught my eye. Directly behind this work of art I had the pleasure of viewing one of Japan’s iconic artist, Takashi Marakami, and his amazing artwork In the Land of the Dead , Stepping on the Tail of A Rainbow. Unfortunately, I missed the Marakami exhibition they had at the MCA here in Chicago. So I was glad to see his artwork here. The Land piece is expansive and wraps around one section of the galleries wall. I was able to get the section of the piece I enjoyed the most…..

It is hard to describe the amount of colors, shades, material, and shapes used in the intimate space that is used at the Broad.  Once you get to the second level you realize the main gallery is not expansive in space. The closeness of the artwork and space allows for a unique view for all visitors. I felt my senses were hijacked, as there were  tons of pieces I wanted to just sit and stare for hours. I could only capture some of the artwork but I highly recommend viewing this museum for contemporary works of art.

There’s so much to see at The Broad that I cannot fully cover everything I seen in this post. I have included other works of art that moved me and that I found interesting. Since much of the gallery is mostly one level you could cover a lot of pieces in a short amount of time. Unfortunately, I was not able to see the Infinity Mirror Room because you must reserve a ticket in advance to visit.  The Broad is definitely a site to see and has some of the best contemporary art work out there.
