El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo Album Review

El Ultimo tour del Mundo cover art. Released November 27th, 2020

You may know Bad Bunny from the Shellphone Corona commercial with Snoop Dogg, or the smash collab hit Te Boté, or maybe his dragged inspired Yo perreo sola video. His rise may seem sudden but his work ethic shows that he is in it to make a gigantic impact on the music scene. This is an artist that has released three albums in one calendar year and has elevated to super stardom in such a short amount of time. His signature sound has always been latin trap and new wave reggaeton. With his latest effort, El Último Tour del Mundo, Bad Bunny takes a different direction and brings a unique change to his creative work.

With his new album, El Último Tour Del Mundo, Bad Bunny once again surprises us and released this new foray with little to no promotion. The theme of the album plays out as the last tour of the world before the end of times. In many of Bad Bunny’s interviews he waxes about this album being one with more feeling, more emotion, darker, and one that shows a different side of himself. It may be the final expression of himself before his time is up and if his time is up he won’t go quietly. Gone are the turn up perreo sounds that dominated his art just a few months prior on YHLQMDLG.

TE DESEO LO MEJOR, TE MUDASTE, and HACIENDO QUE ME AMAS hit all the feels. These tracks are laced with sensual heartbreak and some have a more alternative/rock influence. Te Deseo lo Mejor is a track of knowing your wrongdoing in a relationship and acknowledging your imperfection, but bidding the other person good luck regardless. There are bits of arrogance and pride within all three tracks that make for great additions to his already nuanced catalog. The album plays like great stadium music and I can imagine that Bad Bunny sees himself performing some of these live as we turn to a new year and the possibility of an end to the covid pandemic.

If the world is ending, as it sometimes feels these days, Bad Bunny wont go without some trap bangers in his playlist. HOY COBRE is a more typical latin trap track that grabs a hold of you and doesn’t let go for its brief 2 mins and 42 seconds. It’s about making money and spending it fast. BOOKER T is a nice braggadocious anthem in honor of the 5 time WCW Champion Booker T. The lyrics and flow Bad Bunny comes with on this one are as tough as nails.

This is an effort that might miss with some audiences, but may bring new ones and please his core fanbase. There aren’t groundbreaking tactics being used here but the genre bending is something Bad Bunny uniquely does better than most of his contemporaries like Anuel AA, J. Balvin, Ozuna, or Sech. SORRY PAPI feat ABRA is a pop track and TRELLAS is a minimal alternative song. YO VISTO ASI is Nirvana like and has the grunge feel of the early 90’s. ANTES QUE SE ACABA is a latin EDM track that would be a perfect close out track to a long festival night. MALDITA POBREZA is a spanish rock track that speaks of the shittyness of being poor and not being able to afford a Ferrari for his girl.

YO VISTO ASI is a standout track for me. Its anthem of letting people know you dress however you want and anyone’s opinion on how you dress doesn’t matter. In his Youtube interview with Chente Ydrach, el conejo malo talks about being able to create music and have people feel some type of emotion is one of his main goals. While he’s expressing himself and being true to his genuine character, no matter the feedback, it’s worth it to express yourself. This is at the core of what makes me a fan. It is relatable when you are creative without limitation. Making creative works is an extremely vulnerable place to be. An artist like Bad Bunny is an example of what work ethic and genuine creative expression can take you.

This is an album that is more alternative and less latin trap. It is more experimental than his past 2 efforts but is done in an entertaining way. It is a welcome change and shows the evolution of an artist that is really in a creative zone. No album is perfect and there were in my opinion 2 or 3 tracks too many on the album as a whole. Listen for yourself and share what you thought! Check out, El Ultimo Tour del Mundo streaming now on all platforms.

The Icon

One of the most anticipated exhibits at the Art Institute of Chicago this year was “Andy Warhol: From A to B and back again” When I caught wind that the exhibit would be coming to Chicago. I had to return to one of my favorite places in the windy city, the Art Institute. You often hear of the art icons Basquait, Haring, Picasso, and Warhol in popular culture. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing some of the works of these icons before but I had not seen much of Andy Warhol in particular. With over 400 of his personal works on display it was a no brainer for me. I had to visit. By the end of the exhibit, I was shown the true brilliance of the man and why he is so highly regarded. Let me give you a glimpse of this master at work.

I turned the corner to Michigan avenue to behold the famous lions guarding the entrance to the building. Stretched extensively down the block a line to get in had formed and had me worried. Luckily, I preordered my tickets and did not have to wait outside. I noticed many in line were excited to be there and to view the exhibit. Much to my dismay, there was a secondary line formed inside the massive museum hall specifically for this exhibit. At this point I realized I had not been to anything like this before. It was very exciting. Definitely a different way to take in visual art!

I had finally made it. Upon entering the gallery one could see some of Warhol’s signature styles immediately. The wall was covered with celebrity photos, cow wallpaper, and at the far end you could see the famous portrait of Mao. The exhibit takes a look back at the periods of Warhol’s artistic works. Works included everything from film, drawings, sculpture, prints, and installations that show the true range of this innovator.

The 60s is where you really start to see Warhol’s use of commercial products and logosbeing used. The classic Coke bottles were what first drew my attention but as I walked further into this timeframe the Superman 1961 painting was one that really stood out to me. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to take any photos or video of this one but you can’t say people didn’t try. The use of comic books and one of America’s most iconic superheroes had me amazed and excited for what was still in store.

It was interesting to see some of Andy’s self-portraits. I always find it fascinating to see how an artist sees himself/herself over their lives. Throughout the many years that image changes much like the passing time. Andy’s self portraits are no exception. The wealth of color with each passing portrait is what stands out in the works and I quite enjoyed it.

Besides the many pop culture references and the commercial logos widely used in his works, Warhol is known for celebrity. His infatuation with celebrities from all walks of life is widely known and it was a joy to see some of the many art works created from their likenesses. Being able to see prints of Warhol’s peers like Marilyn Monroe, Muhammad Ali, and Liza Minnelli was great. Each image had a certain intimacy to it that gave me an opportunity to see these celebrities in a different light.

Andy was a celebrity and icon in his time. He chose to indulge and immerse himself in the life of celebrity and I believe that gave an interesting edge to his work. He didn’t choose to be the reclusive artist and I think we all benefit from that.

Art is often influenced by one’s environment. Some of Andy’s later 70s and 80s work began to reflect the tumultuous time. A grieving Jackie Kennedy, a gun, electric chairs, photos of a gruesome car crash and skulls were the focus of Andy’s Death and Disaster phase. These images were certainly powerful and show not the beauty of life but the realness and darkness that is part of life. As I moved to the end of the exhibit, you see his artwork become more cerebral and abstract. I originally was introduced to Andy Warhol through the artwork of Jean-Michel Basquiat so it was a treat to see their collaborative work on display as well. Paramount and Third Eye show two icons embracing each other’s signature style and is a wonder to see.

Andy Warhol was and is an influential artist in Pop Art but his reach goes beyond that. My visit to the Andy Warhol exhibit showed me the true brilliance of the man and why he is so highly regarded. You can see the influence and intrigue of his work through the excitement and gathering of the masses just to get a glimpse of his work. The range, experimentation, collaboration, and true uniqueness of his art is second to none. It was a pleasure and inspiration to see an artistic icon’s work in this way, further cementing his place in history for a new generation.

Architectural wonders at the CAC

If you know anything about me you know that I love architecture. I think in my past life I might have been an engineer or architect. I often marvel at the beautiful architecture that is so readily available in Chicago and consider myself lucky to have so much architectural beauty in my backyard. When it comes to buildings, the final product is often what captures one’s gaze but the inside workings and the engineering that goes into that final product intrigues me just as much. Not only do the skyscrapers and museum campuses grab my attention but a well put together apartment or park can easily catch my eye. Carl Smith’s, The Plan of Chicago: Daniel Burnham and the Remaking of an American City, has had a major influence on me and has helped nurture that love for architecture. Learning about the creation of the city boulevards, the Magnificent mile, and Grant Park in the book had me wanting to learn more. Any opportunity I get to learn more about the inner workings of architecture I immediately jump at.

Riding the “L” the other day I looked up and to my surprise there was another opportunity to learn more. I saw an advertisement for the Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) and immediately started making plans to visit.

The Chicago Architecture Center, formerly known as the Chicago Architecture Foundation, has made its mission to inspire people to discover why design matters. Their Vision, “The Chicago Architecture Center is the leading organization devoted to celebrating and promoting Chicago as a center of architectural innovation. As Chicago’s forum for the exchange of ideas on urban design, the CAC inspires people to participate in the building of vibrant communities and to demand the highest standard in urban design. The CAC awakens young people to achieve their potential through the discovery of architecture, engineering and design.” (About Page: http://www.architecture.org/about/about-us/our-history/). Located on 111 E Wacker Dr., this center is conveniently located adjacent to the Chicago River and is surrounded by many of Chicago’s finest architectural wonders. Admission to the center is $12 for adults, $8 for students, and free for children under 5.

I walked into the center with much enthusiasm and wonder and I did not leave disappointed. The first exhibit I started with was the Chicago 3D model, located on the first floor. It gives you an amazing birds eye view of the city! The first floor also gives you a look into how the city prospered after the Great Chicago Fire.

img_1952

3D Model of Chicago

img_1976

On the second floor, you won’t only learn about the cities current designs but you will also be transported into what future urban cities might look like. The second floor will also give you a glimpse into international architectural wonders that include super sized and miniature models. The center puts a tremendous emphasis and highlight great design, environmentally friendly buildings, technological innovation, and human cooperation. I was blown away by the models on display and could have stayed much longer to examine every model with precise detail. Unfortunately, I did not have more time but I plan to return to the CAC in the near future.

One building that stood out to me during my visit was the Oasia Hotel located in Singapore. The Council on Tall Buildings & Urban Habitat awarded this building the Best Tall Building Worldwide 2018. The open air terraces and red/green covered building just speaks to me. It feels like a fresh take on current architecture and incorporates surrounding nature into the building. The open air terraces account for 40% of the buildings volume and give any visitor a beautiful view and space to take in nature and architecture together.

You won’t want to miss this exhibit and I highly recommend the CAC if you are visiting from out of town or even if you are a local looking to learn more about the beauty of architecture.

A Marathon Journey

I ran the Chicago Marathon for the third time this year, and what an experience it was! Something about this one stood out, something about this one was different from the others. Now, you might ask, what drives you to take part in a marathon spanning 26.2 miles? That’s a lot of miles! How can you run so many miles? Doesn’t it get boring?I thought the same thing and decided to write to you about it!

My marathon journey started back in 2015. Up until that point, I had never run track or taken part in a 5k or even run for fun. Regardless, I went ahead and signed up for the 2015 Chicago marathon without a clue of how to train or what to expect. Nonetheless, I trained myself, worked hard and made it through.

My first marathon was a 4 hr: 50 min time. Not bad for my first time, I thought. Feeling excited and anxious for the next one, I signed up for the 2016 Chicago Marathon. Unfortunately, I took a step back in my second marathon, finishing with a 5hr:19min time. I was extremely disappointed and knew I had not trained as hard as the year before. I took the 2017 marathon off due to some personal reasons, but this year I had to get back to training and give it another go.

The beginning of this year was extremely difficult – not only for myself, but for my family. Early in the year, we received the unfortunate news that my grandfather was diagnosed with stomach cancer. A major blow seeing as my grandmother, his wife, just battled and overcame breast cancer. Sadly, this was not the first experience for my family with stomach cancer. My uncle Cip was also recently diagnosed and died from an aggressive stomach cancer. So we’ve been down that road before and were hoping for the best as my grandfather began his chemo treatment.

It was too late for grandpa, his body did not react well to the chemo. In March, his doctors notified us that there was not much more they could do for him.

I began to feel helpless and fearful – there wasn’t much I could do for my grandfather’s health. Prior to him passing, I did have a talk with him and told him I would run the marathon in his honor and for everyone else affected by cancer. My grandfather passed away in mid-April as the doctors had predicted, even when I wished and I hoped that they’d be wrong. I did, however, have some solace in the fact that I was able to let him know I was going to run the marathon – every mile was a fight against that terrible disease.

When training began in May , I knew that this journey to the October Chicago Marathon would be different, this would no doubt be the most meaningful to date, maybe ever. I decided to run with the American Cancer Society and Team Determination.

Team Determination provided us with two training groups – Chicago Endurance Sports is the training group I decided to run with. I was determined to beat my personal best 4:50 time.

Training out of the south loop Fleet Feet, every Saturday involved the same routine. Wake up at 5:45 am, eat breakfast, stretch, and make my way to the south loop. Every week more miles were added, but every week new friends were made.

I never trained with a pace group before, so I really didn’t know what group to join or if it mattered or what to expect. The 9 min and 30 sec mile group is what I thought would be the best fit for me. There were times in training, especially during the 12+ mile runs, were I doubted and questioned if I could do it this year. Would my body hold up? Why the hell can’t I keep up with everyone? Why am I chafing in these areas of my body?!

The longer the runs become the more you understand that being a marathoner is more than pure strength and physical ability. It involves extreme discipline and dedication. Mental strength is tested just as much as your physical strength, probably even more so. Routine became the best indicator of how I would perform on Saturday’s – so I told myself I’d follow my routine very strictly.

As the marathon neared I didn’t feel as nervous as previous years. For what? I had put in the time  training. I was prepared for this. I trusted the work and sacrifices I’d made all those months.

Throughout training, we ran on mostly warm, humid and sunny days. October 7th, 2018 in Chicago, was anything but sunny.

Race day started with the same routine as training. Eat, stretch, and commute. The weather had been on every runners mind leading up to race day. 50s and rain was in the forecast for us. I kept this in mind but also wouldn’t let the weather distract me. This time I promised my self to enjoy the experience more. Laugh, be vocal, cheer, support my fellow runners, and lastly pose for the camera. The energy from the runners and crowd is absolutely amazing on race day! This helped give me strength when times got tough.

The first 5 miles were smooth. Everything was going according to plan and then came the rain! Somewhere around the 6th and 7th mile it began to rain extremely hard. Thoughts of being cold and how the weather would impact my time kept running in my head. I knew this was going to be part of the challenge but I focused again and kept putting one foot in front of the other.

My amazing family and friends helped fuel that burning desire to finish strong. Seeing them cheer me on and cheer all the runners gives you that push you need. My fellow runners and teammates also helped so much. The running community is built on positivity and encouragement and I’ve seen that first hand in every marathon I’ve been in.

Ultimately, it is up to you to finish the race. Through strength and mental toughness I pushed through mile 19, I overcame cramps, avoided injury, ran in the rain, and crossed that finish line at 4 hrs and 42 mins. As I waited to receive my medal and thought about what had just taken place, I came to realize that beating my personal time by 8 mins was great but that’s not what this marathon was about for me. My journey of becoming a marathoner was always greater than beating a personal time. It’s about the camaraderie, the people you inspire, the donations you raise, the community you become part of, the challenge, goal setting, and lastly the challenge of becoming a greater person.

You ask why I run?

This is why I run.

Just Play Podcast Episode 10: Deep South

Manny P is back with Just Play Podcast Episode 10! This podcast focuses on southern rap and contains 13 tracks and features music by Three 6 Mafia, UGK, Outkast, Gucci Mane and many more.

I had the idea for this podcast for some time now. What became difficult for me was selecting the best tracks to represent southern rap. I had at least 4 to 5 different playlist that included around 13 to 17 tracks. It was really hard to narrow it down but I decided to start with an old school southern rap originators vibe for the first part of the podcast. I went with alot of Three 6 Mafia, UGK, and Outkast at first and moved to more current artist towards the second part of the podcast. As I was creating this podcast I realized that I could potentially do a part 2 or 3 to the deep south podcast. So look out for part 2 of the deep south podcast coming this year.

Creating content like podcast is interesting and involves a lot of moving parts. For this podcast I went live on instagram and shared some behind the scenes video on mixing for the podcast. For my upcoming podcast I will do the same and upload the video on here with the podcast.

Sit back and enjoy the best of southern rap on Just Play Podcast 10 hosted by Manny P!

Playboi Carti with the Album of the Year?

Image result for playboi carti die lit

The album Artwork to Die Lit by Playboi Carti. This image perfectly illustrates what the album contains.

Ever since hearing Magnolia by Playboi Carti I was hooked to his music. What was it that drove me to this Atlanta rapper? It has to be the energy and fun nature that he exudes in his music. Not known for his lyrics but more for his ad-lib and trap style, Playboi is an artist to go to for high energy and catchy hooks. It was interesting to see if his career would expand beyond the hit Magnolia.

A lot of the new young mumble rappers get much flack for their non lyrical and simplistic take on rap music. What they lack in lyrical content they make up for in energy and Playboi Carti is an example of this. With Die Lit, Playboi shows he has lasting power.

My introduction to the album came with tracks Choppa Won’t Miss and the Travis Scott assisted track Love Hurts. The first is an anthem with Playboi ad-libs that are funny and catchy. The beat is a hypnotic syrupy banger that flows incredibly well with  Playboi and Young Thug over it. Young Thug comes in and does his thing and adds style and flavor to this can’t miss track. The second is a bass heavy track produced by Pi’erre Bourne that delights anyone with a great speaker system.

The album packs 19 tracks in under one hour and does this well. The album moves fast and takes you on a lit ride. Most of the tracks come in under the 3 minute mark and sometimes leaves you wanting more.

Skepta the grime king is brought on to inject the grittiness of London rap into Lean 4 Real the third track off the album. This lean and pill popping track is an intense in your face banger that takes a hold of you. That is what this album does best. It feeds it’s listener catchy, loud, bass heavy, leaned-out music that can’t be ignored. In the album’s intro Long Time, Playboi raps about himself finally achieving some kind of success. There is a a grateful nature to the track but it is also lined with a reckless nature as he states “No cap and gown, I ain’t go to class, I’d rather die before I come in last“. That recklessness and F U attitude is why I like him!

Now that album was released in early May and followed a strong album from J Cole and was released before A$AP Rocky’s Testing, Drake’s Scorpion, and the G.O.O.D. Music June releases. In my opinion it has held up well against those albums. Standout tracks include R.I.P Fredo (Notice Me), Shoota, Choppa Won’t Miss, FlatBed Freestyle, and Lean 4 Real. The album features Nicki Minaj, Skepta, Travis Scott, Chief Keef, Bryson Tiller, Young Thug, and Lil Uzi Vert.

Fresh Press Playlist #9

I am back with another Fresh Press Playlist! This week’s playlist focuses on the Summer’s Hottest Songs. This year has seen a tremendous amount of music being dropped. A$AP Rocky, Drake, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, and Travis Scott all released new albums this summer. The summer of 2018 and more importantly the overall year of 2018 will go down as a special time for music. Early releases from Migos, Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone and many others set the tone for the year.

Below are the songs I feel that made an impact on the radio waves and within the Chicago party scene all summer long. I ran a few polls, asking what was the song of the summer, just to get a feel for what people were listening to. Cardi B-I like it ran away with the poll numbers and accounted for 56% of the vote. Drake- In My Feelings came in 2nd with 30% of the vote. Calvin Harris’ One Kiss and Post Malone’s Psycho made up the other 14%.

What was your song of the summer? Did I miss one? Comment below and enjoy the music!

I feel like I couldn’t go anywhere without someone asking me to play some Post Malone. Beer bongs and Bentleys has so many hits that were constantly on music playlist all summer long. This one is a personal favorite of mine from the album. It is amazing to see how big a fan base Post Malone has gained in such a short amount of time since White Iverson.

Lil Baby a new trap star gets help from Lil Uzi and Gunna.

It’s hard to pick from the two tracks released by Childish Gambino earlier this summer, but this one reflects the perfect summer love story. The bounce and vibe are all correct here for any summer activity!

Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa come together to make the greatest pool party jam ever!

A new queen takes over the summer air-waves.

Drake with his many hits off of Scorpion. It was hard to go anywhere without hearing this tune. The video and the Lauryn Hill sample are just right!

This is the song of the summer that you didn’t even know was the song of the summer.

Keke do you love this Playlist?

Fresh Press Playlist #8

It’s been some time since my last Fresh Press Playlist but fear not because I am back to bring you the music you’ve been missing! This playlist is a preview of my upcoming podcast and features a Latin flavor on all tracks. I wanted to focus on music that is outside of my specific preference.

I am a Latino born to Mexican and Guatemalan parents. Music was always such a major part of every day life. At parties or on holidays there is guaranteed to be music playing. Growing up I never paid much attention to the artist or lyrics I just enjoyed listening. Now as I get older and look to expand my musical catalog and push my music taste, I go back and search artist and classic tunes. Lately I have been diving deep into cumbia and salsa.

Latin music is having a major influence on the current radio waves. Artist like Bad Bunny, J. Balvin, Ozuna, and Maluma are having an impact on pop culture and within the club scene. So my focus was to highlight these new emerging artist and include some of the classics that influenced these newer artist.

Enjoy the playlist and come back soon for my two Upcoming podcast.

Many of you might know J. Balvin from the hit Mi Gente. His album Vibras has so much energy and is packed with hits. Cuando Tu Quieras follows another banger Ambiente. The album tracklist was well organized and adds to the cohesiveness of the album. Check out Vibras for more J. Balvin.

I found this gem on Soulection Radio. Joe Kay always dropping the fire. No more words necessary. Press Play

This video always puts me in A good mood. Los Angeles Azules perform this classic with full orchestra and we are blessed by the amazing vocals from Ximena Sarinana. Cumbia classic!

Being a creative you always seem to go back to the drawing board to edit. The final product sometimes is totally different from when you start or could have minor edits. I had already finalized all tracks for the podcast until………I seen this video. Visually stunning!
